Summary
Nine years ago, the Empire of Giad declared war on all neighboring countries using an army of autonomous drones known as the Legion. Threatened by the soulless killing machines, the Republic of San Magnolia, home to the silver-haired Alba race, evacuated its citizens inside 85 districts and developed supposedly unmanned drones known as Juggernauts to counter the Legion. Even after years of war, the Republic boasts that they have suffered zero casualties. However, the battlefield bathed in crimson recites a different melody.The hand dealt to the Colorata people—a minority forced into living in the “nonexistent” 86th district—is one of utter contempt and scorn. Looked upon as human filth, they are ordered to pilot the Juggernauts as Processors under the command of Republican Handlers.
Vladilena Milizé, a republican soldier with a strong sense of justice, detests the way her countrymen treat the 86. When she is assigned to the Spearhead Squadron as their handler, she meets a group of oddballs and eventually grows attached to them—particularly their captain, Shinei Nouzen, a boy with a pure sense of purpose and resolve. However, the path they walk is one riddled with death, and growing close to an 86 may have just set Vladilena down a path of despair.

Background
86 won the Grand Prize at the 23rd Dengeki Novel Awards in 2016. The light novel ranked second and fifth in the 2018 and 2019 Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! in the Light Novel category, respectively. The series has been published in English as 86: Eighty-Six by Yen Press under the Yen On imprint since March 26, 2019. It has also been released in Italian by Dokusho Edizioni since April 2, 2024.

Following a hiatus starting in July 2021, 86 was canceled in June 2022 due to Motoki Yoshihara's poor health. The series was published in English as 86: Eighty-Six by Yen Press from December 15, 2020 to October 4, 2022. It was also released in French by Delcourt-Tonkam from March 16, 2022, to November 9, 2022.

Summary
The disappearance of the Spearhead Squadron beyond the horizon does little to hide the intensity of the Republic of San Magnolia's endless propaganda. Vladilena Milizé continues to operate as "Handler One," the commander of yet another dehumanized 86th faction's squadron in the continuous war against the Legion.On the Western Front, Shinei Nouzen and his squad are quarantined in a military base controlled by the Federal Republic of Giad, formerly known as the Giadian Empire. The newly-established government grants the saved Eighty-Six full citizenship and freedom. Housed by the president Ernst Zimmerman himself, the group meets his adoptive daughter and the last Empress, Augusta Frederica Adel-Adler.
However, within the calm of this tender society, Shinei and his team feel that their purpose is on the battlefield. Before long, they are once again in the midst of the Legion’s onslaught as a part of the Federacy’s Nordlicht Squadron, accompanied by Augusta Frederica.
