SummaryWhen Hikaru Shindou discovers an old go board in his grandfather's attic, he is greeted by the spirit of an ancient go master, Fujiwara no Sai. Sai spent his life teaching the techniques of the board game to an emperor during the Heian era, and now in his ghostly state, he is eager to share his passion with the unsuspecting Hikaru. The only problem is that Hikaru is not all that interested in board games. But Sai is not easily dissuaded. Pressured by Sai's unrelenting desire to pursue something he refers to as the "Divine Move," Hikaru begrudgingly consents to playing the game, executing moves as dictated by Sai. But slowly, intrigued by the dedication of his peers, he begins to learn the basics of the game.

As Hikaru enters into the world of go, guided by his intangible tutor and inspired by his rival, Akira Touya, he cannot help but be drawn into the complex game as he grows determined to prove his own abilities.

BackgroundHikaru no Go won the 45th Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shounen category in 2000. The series also won the Creative Award at the seventh Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2003. The series was published in English by VIZ Media under the Shonen Jump imprint from May 19, 2004, to May 3, 2011. It was also released in Brazilian Portuguese by Editora JBC from January 2010 to July 2012.

SummaryWhile searching through his grandfather's attic, Hikaru Shindou stumbles upon an old go board. Touching it, he is greeted by a mysterious voice, and soon after falls unconscious. When he regains his senses, he discovers that the voice is still present and belongs to Fujiwara no Sai, the spirit of an ancient go expert. A go instructor for the Japanese Emperor in the Heian Era, Sai's passion for the game transcends time and space, allowing him to continue playing his beloved game as a ghostly entity. Sai's ultimate goal is to master a divine go technique that no player has achieved so far, and he seeks to accomplish this by playing the board game through Hikaru.

Despite having no interest in board games, Hikaru reluctantly agrees to play, executing moves as instructed by Sai. However, when he encounters the young go prodigy Akira Touya, a passion for the game is slowly ignited within him. Inspired by his newfound rival, Hikaru’s journey into the world of go is just beginning.

SummaryMiddle school student Hikaru Shindou is enjoying time with his friends in the go club room when a baseball crashes through the window. When the young boy confronts the baseball team, Hikaru ends up breaking fellow student Tetsuo Kaga's prized teacup in the process. With the help of his Heian-era mentor, Fujiwara no Sai, Hikaru searches an antique shop for a replacement cup but is put off by the unscrupulous shopkeeper's behavior. Unwilling to let this conduct slide by, Hikaru decides that intervening is the only option.

BackgroundHikaru no Go: Sabaki no Ikkyoku! Inishie no Hana yo Sake!! is an alternate version of the story featured in episode 64 of Hikaru no Go. It was screened at Jump Festa 2002 and included in the Hikaru no Go DVD box set released on November 6, 2009.

SummaryHikaru is given a phone call asking him to appear in the Japan/China/Korea Junior's Tournament but he finds out he will have to take place in a preliminary tournament to choose Japan's three contestants. Upon discussing this with Akira, he discovers that Akira has already been chosen for the tournament and will not be taking place in the preliminaries. Hikaru then decides not to visit Akira's Go Salon until he takes his place on the team with Akira. That may be tougher than originally planned, as not only does Hikaru have to battle with old friends for one of two coveted spots, but he may have a new challenger, in a promising player from the Kansai Go Institute.
