ルパン三世
Summary
International man of mystery and master thief extraordinaire, Lupin III comes from a long line of high stakes bandits, all committed to stealing from the rich and giving to themselves. Fortunately, Lupin tends to avoid robbing society's virtuous and, instead, targets some pretty shady characters.Of course, he partners with some pretty shady characters as well: Daisuke Jigen is an ex-mafia hitman who carries himself with a somber demeanor, his trademark black fedora tilted forward to hide his eyes. Goemon Ishikawa is a cipher-like swordsman with samurai-ish overtones who mysteriously fades in and out of Lupin’s exploits. Fujiko Mine is the object of Lupin’s affections, but, since she is a thief herself, the duo’s romance more than occasionally clashes with their competition for big scores.
The global police force, Interpol, and in particular the tenacious Inspector Zenigata, long to capture Lupin and his gang. Zenigata’s relationship with the eponymous master thief is a complicated one, characterized by mutual respect laced with utter disdain. The two have even worked together when it’s served both their interests, but they understand that when the crisis ends, they must resume their former wariness and animosity toward each other.

DiC decided to do a co-production with TMS and bring the Lupin the 3rd series to a Western audience. Some changes were made such as Lupin was no longer a thief but a detective, Jigen was no longer a smoker and it was set in the future. It was decided that the series was going to be called Arsène et Cie in France while it was called Lupin VIII internationally. Rintaro (Shigeyuki Hayashi) who worked on Captain Harlock and Galaxy Express 999 was the director and Shingo Araki was brought in as a character designer along with Michi Himeno. Monkey Punch had originally came up with character designs of the cast however the character designs had changed from his early designs. There was a problem during production and that was with the Maurice Leblanc estate. While the Lupin name was used in Japan and Italy at this point without issues, the Maurice Leblanc estate demanded money for the use of the Lupin name while TMS and DiC refused to pay what they were asking. This was also the same issue that had problems releasing the series outside of Japan with France adopting the Edgar de la Cambriole name, Lupin was renamed to Wolf or Cliff in the US while Spain and Italy that kept the Lupin name had to distance from Arsène Lupin affecting later dubbed episodes of Lupin the 3rd Part 2. Summary
Lupin III and his friends head for the Bermuda Sea, aiming for a "mysterious island" that does not exist on the world map. The goal is to uncover the identity of the mastermind who has been sending assassins to the island and to uncover the vast treasure that is hidden there. However, just as they approach the island, their plane is shot down by snipers, and the group crash-lands on an island of death. What they find there is an end-of-the-world landscape of piles of decaying weapons and nuclear missiles, and “garbage men” who were once used as weapons but have been discarded, roaming the streets. The island is shrouded in fog, filled with a poison that can kill within 24 hours, and there is no escape.
The ruler of the island, Muom, is determined to rule the world by selection and elimination under the banner of immortality. Faced with a “deathless enemy” who cannot be killed with a gun or a sword, Lupin puts his past, and his pride as a thief on the line in a battle of wits.
Will Lupin be able to steal everything within 24 hours and escape the island alive?
